I'm gonna apologize first for not jumping over the moon for the movie (seriously, gua ngantuk. Love the theme song tho), and oh I haven't read the book, sorry. Heard lotsa hoo-haa about the musical but too bad I wasn't in Jakarta back then. And they came to Singapore. Not very excited but we bought the tickets anyway.
That Saturday, I went to Esplanade not knowing that I would see such a magnificent performance.
Oh my, it was amazing. Like, you know, AMAZING. It's the stage, the music, THE CAST. Those child actors, I was speechless, I didn't know such talents, such voices, such confidence existed. It was them, really, it was THE kids.
I only found 2 flaws (sorry I know it's annoying, I'm just a sotoy girl with no right to criticize masterpiece but it's just a feedback for better future okay):
The song lyrics (maap ya Mbak Mira), hmmh, some of them still sound maksa, can't remember which songs, but I am sure if they were given more time to do further editing/refining, all the songs would be purrfect.
And the animated background. Yang ini please deh, I'm not apologizing for this. I'm not an animation expert but duh I can tell lah, come on. Gaya illustrasinya seringkali kontras banget sama the entire visual ambience. Contohnya pas mereka nyanyi tentang Lintang, trus backgroundnya animasi si Lintang lagi naik sepeda. Aduhh, miris, sorry to say, jelek banget. Hal-hal kayak gini ini bisa menghapus ingatan manis penonton soal indahnya Musikal Laskar Pelangi, that is definitely something we have to worry about.
Ok I'm done judging, back to admiration mode. Gak tau mo ngomong apalagi sih, tapi intinya standing ovation for the entire cast and crew for the hard work, Andrea Hirata for the story (tho I'm seriously not a fan of this guy), Erwin Gutawa for the delightful music (and emotional ups and downs), and Riri Riza, Mira Lesmana, Jay Subyakto, Toto Arto, and Hartati for the superb theatrical experience! Gw pengen lompat rasanya waktu Mbak Miles dan Mas Riri muncul pas curtain call!
